The Sailor's Song (Pages) Bass Cover by Lars-Erik Dahle
Before they briefly took over the world with monster hits «Kyrie» and «Broken Wings» in 1985 as Mr. Mister, Richard Page and Steve George were in the lesser known, but still influential, Pages.
Pages made three albums between 1978 and 1981, and The Sailor’s Song is one of my favorite tunes from 1979 release «Future Street». Of three albums, Future Street is my favorite. A true band record, its eclectic bunch of songs are ambitious, complex and energetic. Atypically for the genre, it’s endearingly rough around the edges, especially in contrast with their next, Jay Graydon-produced album - which is a masterpiece in its own right, but at the opposite end of the spectrum, energy-wise.
I’ve had the pleasure of playing this song live a bunch of times, and it’s always a pleasure diving into Jerry Manfredi’s complex, latin infused, disco-era fusion bassline.
As always, recorded at home with my trusty 1974 Precision and Avalon U5. Enjoy!
